Commuting in Yemen…Survival of the Maddest PDF Print E-mail

A day after my plane landed in Sana'a, a traffic sign caught my eye, "slow down, a school ahead." I was pleasantly surprised by this sign, but my joyful moments evaporated as a taxi driver sped and bypassed us in the school zone. Few minutes later, an unannounced dabbab (small shuttle bus) driver decided to jump from his lane to our lane without signaling and without checking his blind spot. Out of no where, a number of loud and obnoxious motorbikes took off, suffocating us with dust and engine waste and stirring streams from nearby sewage slough. The abundant amount of fumes produced from ill-maintained vehicles blurs any driver's vision and suffocates any pedestrian's nostrils. Honking, of course, is a continuous melody throughout any ride. Moreover, most motorbikes' drivers take a "noise-inhibiting" piece out of their exhaust to produce a deafening noise. Unfortunately, these drivers are usually teenagers who should be in school. Instead, they are enjoying undeserved freedoms and projecting a wrong perception of manhood by speeding or showing off their zigzag driving.

He and I were both locked into the darkened room and an overall feeling of helplessness engulfed us. Frustration gnawed at out fingertips and rejection became the forefront of our thoughts. The velvety, unforgiving blackness of the room created an encroaching and suffocating atmosphere all around us and the walls seemed to creep closer, eventually fusing our imaginary scapula bones into one. He and I were not friends but mere neighbours found within rows upon rows of perfectly defined acquaintances. We shared the same birth mother, the pen and we were always delivered in the same way, through the mouth. I liked a challenge whilst he liked calmness but we were both turned away this time, a common occurrence despite our innocent meanings. Let me introduce ourselves, I am “Difference” and he is “Acceptance”.

Hopes and dreams are becoming increasingly unheard of, in a country where school enrolment is declining and the rate of illiteracy is increasing, what chance does an eight-year old pupil have in becoming what he hopes to become, or realizing the dreams he/she might have.

Reading the newspaper has become more depressing for me, as I know that there are no significant improvements taking place in the country, otherwise more efforts would have been noted in the over reporting of such improvements. Any sentence which starts with 'experts say..' or 'an official source noted..' is nothing but another shame that disgraces the face of the nation and another disappointment for the eight-year old.

Former British intelligence agent, Alastair Crooke, holding Freedom Sun Orchestra (أوركسترا شمس الحرية) DVD which showcases Hezbollah's orchestra playing European symphonies. He played the DVD at the beginning of his talk entitled "Recognizing Resistance" in which he argued for the need for the west to recognize legitimate and grassroot-supported Islamic resistance movements (such as Hamas and Hezbollah) and the general Islamic awakening at large at a deeper intellectual level in order for the west to move forward.

Unfortunately, I was not allowed to record the talk, but the interview below will give you a good feel for the man's views.

Do you agree with his views? If yes, do you feel more comfortable expressing these views that a white Western man had expressed them before you?

Why?

Theology or Political-Theology? (from our archives) PDF Print E-mail

Theology or Political-Theology?It is amazing to see how some of the most fundamental concepts of Islam have been distorted following the current political trends in the region.  We now see Arab and Foreign media using the term suicide bomber as a synonym for a Mujahed.  Such terminology has now become a part of the international language of current affairs, and as we see it and hear it in the news, our understanding has been misguided by a few editors who think they have the right to use the terminology they see fit.
