I have recently read a topic on leadership skills and how to be a leader and build leadership skills. It was fascinating because I realized that being a leader is not limited to political leaders we hear about whether good leadership figures like Nelson Mandela, or bad like Hitler.
Both these opposite in personality characters were able to lead and influence people. However, leadership exists at all levels of the social spectrum and leadership skills are learned rather than being inborn within a person. Therefore, it is a skill that needs to be shaped and enhanced by people. To be a good leader is to choose to live as a good leader, to integrate human rights, values, and principles into ones personality and life. To be able to be empathic and stand in others shoes. To better understand and to respect other people’s opinions and perspectives. To be able to accept constructive criticism. To understand that realities are looked at differently by different people. To value peace and diversity and to promote them. To look at things from a positive perspective and to attract positive actions and reactions. Therefore, being a leader would not only include my determination to excel in academic studies, but it also includes extending my knowledge by reading more and stepping out of the box into reading books that I wouldn’t otherwise think of reading. I plan to build good relations with my fellow students and lecturers, continue keeping in touch with them and track their development, and offering them any kind of cooperation. When finishing my four year bachelor program, I would return to my country and obtain a job in civil society organizations as I believe it is the most influential sector in Yemen towards any kind of reforms, and that is where I will exhibit my leadership.
